A Meadow-Inspired Roundabout

At the entrance to the small town of Saint-Chély d’Apcher, the roundabout has been transformed into a mixed perennial planting, inspired by the stunning beauty and diversity of the subalpine meadows of the Aubrac plateau. The forms and colours of the emblematic Aubrac flora — the upright yellow gentian, the deep violet of wild orchids and vetch — guided the design. Planted in a low-fertility substrate with a gravel mulch, the vegetation establishes gradually, requiring very little maintenance while encouraging resilience and seasonal change. The project was realised in collaboration with the municipality’s green space team and the botanical garden, combining local knowledge with an ecological design approach.

À l’entrée de la petite ville de Saint-Chély d’Apcher, le rond-point a été transformé en une plantation vivace mixte, inspirée par la beauté et la diversité remarquables des prairies subalpines du plateau de l’Aubrac. Les formes et les couleurs de la flore emblématique de l’Aubrac — la gentiane jaune, fièrement dressée, le violet profond des orchidées sauvages et des vesces — ont guidé la conception. Plantée sur un substrat pauvre, recouvert d’un paillage minéral, la végétation s’installe progressivement, demandant très peu d’entretien tout en favorisant la résilience et la dynamique saisonnière. Le projet a été réalisé en collaboration avec l’équipe des espaces verts de la commune et le jardin botanique, alliant savoir-faire local et approche écologique du paysage.
